Frequently Asked Questions

What does Bit Source do?
We design and ship custom software, mobile apps, data platforms, and immersive AR/VR experiences. Our teams handle discovery, UI/UX, development, integrations, hosting, and long-term support for public and private sector clients in Central Appalachia and beyond.

Who do you serve best?
Municipal and county agencies, tourism & heritage groups, healthcare and nonprofits, education, regional businesses, startups. We’re built for mission-critical, community-impact projects with real users and real constraints.

How does a project start?
With a short intro call and a discovery sprint. We map goals, users, integrations, scope, timeline, and risks then deliver a fixed scope proposal or a phased plan if uncertainty is high.

How long do projects take?
Small pilots: ~4–8 weeks. Typical builds: ~8–16 weeks. Larger platforms roll out in phases over several months. Timeline depends on scope, integrations, and content readiness.

What do projects typically cost?
Budgets vary by scope and compliance needs. Pilots are often in the five-figure range; full platforms can be six figures. After discovery, we provide a detailed estimate, milestones, and payment schedule.

Do we keep the IP and source code?
Yes—clients own project IP and delivered source code upon final payment. We may use vetted open-source frameworks or internal accelerators; licenses and attributions are documented.

What tech stacks do you use?
We choose tools to fit the job. Common stacks include React/Next.js, Node/Python, Postgres, PostGIS, Firebase, and cloud services on AWS/GCP/Azure. For AR, we use Unity/Unreal or WebAR where appropriate.

Can you integrate with our existing systems?
Yes. We routinely integrate with CRMs, EMRs, GIS (e.g., ArcGIS), payment gateways, identity providers (SSO/OAuth), and legacy databases via APIs, ETL, or secure connectors.

Do you support HIPAA/PII and regulated work?
Yes. We design for compliance (HIPAA/FERPA/etc.) with role-based access, audit logs, encryption in transit/at rest, secure hosting, and BAAs as needed.

How do you handle security?
Threat-modeling, least-privilege access, dependency scanning, encrypted secrets, environment isolation (dev/stage/prod), backups, monitoring, and incident playbooks. We align with OWASP best practices.

What about accessibility (ADA/WCAG)?
Accessibility is built into design, code, and QA. We target WCAG 2.1 AA, support keyboard navigation and screen readers, and run automated and manual audits.

Where do you host?
Cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure) or your preferred environment. We provision VPCs, managed databases, CDN, observability, and backup/restore—plus on-prem or hybrid if required.

Do you offer maintenance and support?
Yes. Flexible support plans cover monitoring, SLA response times, dependency updates, bug fixes, small enhancements, and security patches.

Can you help with grants and procurement?
We often provide statements of work, technical narratives, budgets, and outcome metrics to support grant applications and public procurement.

Do you build native mobile apps and handle app-store releases?
Yes—iOS and Android (native or cross-platform). We manage signing, store listings, submissions, and updates.

Do you build AR/VR for tourism and education?
Yes. We create on-site tours, scavenger hunts, and immersive exhibits. Options include phone-based AR (no headset) and headset-based experiences for venues.

How do you measure success?
We agree on KPIs up front—adoption, task completion, time saved, revenue/donations, visitor engagement, or service throughput—and instrument analytics and dashboards to track them.

How do we get started?
Share your goals and constraints. We’ll schedule a discovery call, outline options and tradeoffs, and provide a right-sized plan with timeline, team, and cost.
